MCS student Maria Ayuyu awarded at national honor society event

(MCS) — Mount Carmel School student Maria Ayuyu was recently recognized for her academic accomplishments at the National Society for High School Scholar’s Day 2019 in Washington, D.C. The annual event was held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center from August 9 to 10, 2019.

The National Society for High School Scholars, or the NSHSS, is an academic honor society, committed to recognizing and serving the highest-achieving student scholars in more than 26,000 high schools across 170 countries. With access to resources and a network of more than 1.7 million exceptional peers spanning high school to college and career, the NSHSS scholars embody academic dedication and outstanding leadership in their schools, workplaces, and communities.

During the event, participants were able to network with their peers and professionals, gain insight during a college and career exhibition, and to take advantage of mentorship opportunities. By the end of the event, students were awarded for their academic achievements and fully inducted into the NSHSS.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to be in such a prestigious society,” shared Maria. “After being in such a big area with people from various ethnic backgrounds, I developed a tremendous amount of respect for people from all parts of the world.”

When asked if Mount Carmel School helped her prepare to join the NSHSS Maria shared, “MCS helped me prepare for this event in ways of support. The school taught me to strive for greater things because there will always be room for improvement.”

Mount Carmel School president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero commented on Maria’s recent accomplishment by sharing, “I am very proud of Maria and all of our students that use their ambition to take on any personal and professional opportunities that come their way.”

Many students from Mount Carmel School have participated in local and national academic opportunities to expand in their personal and professional capacity. In addition to the NSHSS, students have participated in the Junior Statesmen of America, National Speech and Debate Association, the International Thespians Society, a CSI program at George Mason University, and University of Southern California’s Creative Writing Summer Program.
