Okinawan group to mark 50th annual visit to Saipan, Tinian

ABOUT 140 members of the Micronesia Repatriation Association or MRA of Okinawa will visit Saipan and Tinian this week for their 50th annual pilgrimage.

Gordon I. Marciano, managing director of Pacific Development Inc., which is facilitating the visit, said the delegation includes Okinawa Prefecture Gov. Denny Tamaki.

A peace ceremony will be held on Tuesday at the Okinawa Peace Memorial in Marpi. On Wednesday, the group will hold a similar ceremony on Tinian.

The governor’s office and the Saipan mayor’s office will host dinner for the Okinawans on Wednesday at the Carolinian Utt in Garapan.

The Marianas Visitors Authority will sponsor the entertainment during the dinner reception.

Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said this will be the last visit to the Northern Marianas of some elderly members of MRA who are former residents of Saipan and Tinian.

But the members of the new generation will continue to make annual visits to the CNMI, the mayor added.

Each year, the MRA group visits the islands to honor the people who died here in World War II and to pray for world peace.
