International Coastal Cleanup this Saturday

THE local coordinator of the International Coastal Cleanup said everything is set for this year’s event, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Colleen C. Flores, who is also communications assistant of the Division of Coastal Resources Management, said in a phone interview on Thursday: “What’s special about this cleanup is that we don’t just ask the volunteers to pick the trash, but also to go beyond it.”

Last year, 1,532 volunteers participated in the ICC and gathered 9,180 pounds of trash in 50 locations in the CNMI.

This year, 45 private and public agencies and 872 volunteers have signed up on Saipan. On Tinian, there are over 400 volunteers and on Rota, over 600 volunteers have signed up.

This year’s International Coastal Cleanup will take place on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. in various coastal areas on Saipan, Rota and Tinian.

The event is the world’s largest single-day cleanup drive with over 100 countries around the world participating to clean their local coastal areas, lakes and rivers.
