Hindu community concludes Navratri, Durga Puja celebration

WHILE Saipan was still experiencing strong winds brought by Typhoon Hagibis, the island’s Hindu community concluded its five-day celebration of the Navratri and Durga Puja festivals on Tuesday.

One of the organizers, Anand R. Katta, said they postponed Monday’s event due to the typhoon.

But on Tuesday, “we prayed, and enjoyed the food and entertainment,” he said, adding that friends and other guests also participated in the program, which was held from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Chalan Kanoa.

The Navratri and Durga Puja festivals were supposed to be nine days of celebration, but they were shortened to five days because of the work-schedule of the Hindu community members, Katta said.

“We had a very good turnout,” he said, as he thanked community members who joined them in the annual celebration.
