Yumul is acting speaker; Quitugua, acting Senate president

REPRESENTATIVE Ralph N. Yumul and Senate Floor Leader Justo Quitugua were designated on Friday as acting House speaker and Senate president, respectively.

House Floor Leader John Paul Sablan, the acting speaker, and Senate President Victor Hocog left the island on Saturday to join Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, the Commonwealth Ports Authority board and the Tinian Legislative Delegation in Hawaii.

They were invited by the Department of Defense’s U.S. Indo-Pacific Command to a meeting and to witness a live-fire exercise.

Sablan has been the acting speaker since Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao and Vice Speaker Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero left Saipan more than two weeks ago to accompany family members undergoing medical treatment at off-island facilities.

In his memorandum, Sablan informed Yumul and the rest of the House members that Sablan was designating Yumul as acting speaker.

Likewise, Hocog, in a separate memo, designated Quitugua as the acting Senate president until Hocog’s return.

Sablan and Hocog are expected to be back on island on Oct. 13.

Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, who is the chairman of the Tinian delegation, is also in Hawaii.

The CNMI officials are in Hawaii “at the invitation of the Department of Defense’s U.S. Indo-Pacific Command for a series of military meetings that was prescheduled several months ago,” the administration said.
