NMI awarded more than $785,000 for high priority energy projects

(Office of the Governor) — On Thursday, Assistant Interior Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Doug Domenech informed Gov. Ralph DLG Torres that the CNMI had been awarded a total of $785,381 in FY 2019 grant funding through the Office of Insular Affairs’ Energizing Insular Community or EIC program.

The EIC funding will be awarded to the Office of the Governor for the following high priority energy projects within the Commonwealth:

  • • $222,988 towards the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation Battery Energy Storage System Feasibility Study for Rota.
  • • $160,000 for the Rota Aquaponics Program Photovoltaic System.
  • • $152,393 for the CNMI Strategic Energy Plan Update.
  • • $250,000 for Photovoltaic Lighting for Tinian Public Buildings and Pathways.

“Energy projects are a critical part of our administration’s goals towards energy efficiency on all three islands, and we are very grateful to Assistant Secretary Domench and OIA for funding these priorities. The projects will help improve the lives of residents on Rota and Tinian, while also allowing us to plan for bigger energy priorities in the future. Lt. Governor Palacios and I thank our Office of Grants Management Team for their hard work, Mayor of Rota Efraim Atalig and his team, and Mayor of Tinian Edwin P. Aldan and his team for their coordination on these projects,” said Governor Torres.
