NMI Legislature to host APIL board meeting

THE CNMI Legislature will host the 60th board of directors meeting of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures from Dec. 3 to 6.

Legislative Bureau Director Tony Sablan has asked Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao and Senate President Victor Hocog not to schedule any legislative activities during the APIL board meeting here.

He also requested that the House chamber and other resources of the Legislature be made available to support the APIL meeting.

“The schedule of the event activities will be made available as they are confirmed and we look forward to providing our APIL island delegates a Hafa Adai experience,” Sablan said in his memorandum.

In an interview, Rep. Ivan Blanco, who is also the APIL secretary, said 39 APIL members, and their staffers are expected to arrive here for the meeting.

The APIL members who will attend the meeting are from Yap, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Guam, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Hawaii.

Nauru and American Samoa have yet to confirm their participation, Blanco said.

Blanco, who attended the APIL general assembly in Majuro in July, said this is the second time that the CNMI Legislature is hosting an APIL board meeting.

Hawaii, for its part, will host the APIL general assembly next year.

The APIL leadership comprises Pohnpei Sen. Edgar W. Lickaneth, president; Chuuk Sen. Nelson Stephen, vice president; and Kiribati Member of Parliament Kaure Babo, treasurer.

The other CNMI representatives to APIL are Sen. Vinnie Sablan and Rep. Joseph Leepan Guerrero.
