Police said the incident happened on Aug. 31, 2019 when responding officers saw Pua holding two machetes on his right hand and a bottle of gin on his left hand.

The victim told police that Pua approached him while he was mixing pig’s food at a “pala-pala,” the local term for pavilion or canopy.

Police said Pua asked the victim to call his uncle while poking the victim’s chest with a machete.

As the victim was about to call his uncle, Pua swung the machete at the victim’s head but missed, police said.

The victim said he ran toward his house as he was concerned about his family’s safety.

Pua then shouted, “I’m going to kill you guys, I’m going to cut you guys.”

Later, in an interview with police, Pua said he only wanted to ask his uncle for firewood to cook rice and barbecue, adding that he was not intoxicated at that time. He said when the police arrived and asked him to put down the machete he complied.

At a bail hearing on Monday, Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo imposed a $10,000 cash bail on Pua.

Assistant Attorney General Heather Barcinas, who represented the government, noted Pua’s prior arrest record and conviction as she asked the court to maintain the bail.

Judge Govendo granted the request of the government lawyer and remanded Pua to the custody of the Department of Corrections. The court also appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Pua.

He was ordered to return to court on Nov. 27 at 9 a.m. for a preliminary hearing and on Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. for his arraignment.

In 2017, Pua served a one-year sentence for theft of vehicle.

In July 2019, he was arrested for a disturbing the peace and assault incident at the Saipan Vegas Resort in Chalan Laulau.
