Government will continue to control costs, says Finance chief

FINANCE Secretary David DLG Atalig said even though the austerity measure implemented by the government will end soon, the Commonwealth will continue to observe cost containment.

This include reviewing every travel, contract, and purchase of over $2,500, he said.

He noted that all government agencies under the executive branch, the Public School System, and Northern Marianas College have complied with the austerity measure, which was carried out due to a significant reduction in government revenue collections following Typhoon Yutu.

Atalig said the CNMI government was able to save close to $500,000 every pay period when the 72-hour work schedule was executed this year.

He said he supports the restoration of the 80-hour work period, adding that it may help boost the community’s “buying power.”

What the CNMI also needs, he added, are business activities that generate government revenue.

Governor Ralph DLG Torres has issued a directive restoring government hours from 72 biweekly to 80 biweekly starting Nov. 24.
