Dec. 4 is International Day of People with Disabilities

THE Office of Vocational Rehabilitation will join the world in observing the International Day of People with Disabilities on Dec. 4 at the CNMI Center for Living Independently building on Capital Hill.

Naomi Tudela, OVR’s employment specialist, said the United Nations initiated the observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 1992.

Maryann Borja Arriola

OVR chief Maryann Borja Arriola said they will reach out to people with disabilities and inform them about the services and other programs provided by OVR and its partner agencies.

“Our goal is equality, accessibility and inclusivity for the people with disabilities in our community — we don’t want them ignored or disconnected,” Arriola said.

This year’s theme is “The future is accessible.”

During the signing of the 2019 International Day of People with Disabilities proclamation, Arriola said people with disabilities will talk about their success stories in college and their chosen careers.

Arriola said the event also aims to provide “an opportunity for the able-bodied and the disabled to create friendships and build relationships to alleviate isolation, enrich lives, and connect with the community.”
