“We have a great crowd of tourists and community members, and there are a lot of schools participating this year,” she added.

She said MVA partnered with PDM Promoters Inc., Team PDI, and other travel partners to host Christmas in the Marianas at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan.

In his remarks, Skymark chair Nabuo Sayama said their direct Narita-Saipan flight service, which began on Friday, will further strengthen the historic friendship between Japan and the Northern Marianas and bring more Japanese tourists to Saipan.

Iakopo said this year’s Christmas in the Marianas started with the illumination of the Christmas tree lights, including the Christmas tree entries of participating schools, and a caroling contest for elementary schools.

Among the guest performers was the Saipan Awadori team.

The carolers on Saturday represented Kagman Elementary School, Green Meadow School, Koblerville Elementary School, Oleai Elementary School, San Vicente Elementary School, Mt. Carmel School, Saipan International School, Grace Christian Academy, and Agape Christian School.

On Dec. 7, the teams from middle, junior, and high schools will compete in a caroling contest from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
