House to restore group health, life insurance funding as soon as possible

THE House of Representatives will restore as soon as possible the funding for the group health and life insurance and defined contribution plan of judicial and legislative branch employees, Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao said.

In an interview on Monday, Attao said the House will convene on Tuesday next week to discuss, among other things, a proposed amendment to the fiscal year 2020 budget.

“Right now we are still paying for it, but if we fail to address it soon then we might incur a debt,” he added. “So we want to address that.”

He said during the deliberation on the FY 2020 budget, both the House and the Senate “had an understanding” that a portion of the funding for the independent programs of the central government would pay for the group health and life insurance and DC plan of employees of the three branches of government.

The budget bill proposed $692,092 for the DC plan and $5.2 million for the group health and life insurance of employees of the three branches of government.

But the governor vetoed the funding for the group health and life insurance and DC plan of judicial and legislative employees, saying that it should come from the budgets of both branches.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Ivan Blanco in a separate interview said he will be ready to pre-file the proposed amendment to the budget, today, Tuesday.
