Update on recent Bird Island/Marpi case

(DPS) — On Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, at about 2:16 p.m., the CNMI Department of Public Safety received a 911 call reporting a possible dead individual in the Bird Island, Marpi area. Police and medics arrived on scene and confirmed the report.

The body was processed by Crime Scene Investigators and transported to the Commonwealth Health Center morgue. Due to the state of the body, an identification of the body could not be determined. A preliminary exterior examination of the body was conducted by Dr. Philip Dauterman of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. Dr. Dauterman indicated that there were no signs of trauma on the body of the individual. DPS is only able to confirm that the individual is an adult male.

DPS has requested the Attorney General’s Office to hire a certified medical examiner. If a certified medical examiner is hired, he or she will be able to determine the cause of death, the circumstances surrounding the death of the individual, and possibly identify the individual.

This case remains open and is pending further investigation.

DPS is looking into a possible relation of a separate case which was reported days earlier. On Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, DPS received a call reporting a Toyota Corolla, that had been parked at the look-out for the past three days. Police responded and noticed that the key for the vehicle was left in the ignition. A CNMI driver’s license was found inside the vehicle belonging to an Asian male. The individual has no immediate family members on island, and border crossings indicate that the individual did not leave the island. The vehicle was later returned to an auto shop, which lent the vehicle as a courtesy vehicle.

DPS is encouraging the public to call 911 anytime to report a crime or an emergency. Police officers are here to help you.
