Zoning Board wants Ogumoro to stay

SAIPAN Zoning Board Chairman Mariano Taitano said they have asked Zoning Administrator Therese Ogumoro to reconsider her decision to resign.

She tendered her resignation on Nov. 20, and it will take effect on Dec. 16.

Taitano said they have requested Ogumoro to stay for at least 30 to 60 more days.

“It was so sudden when she announced her resignation,” he said, adding that the board needs ample time to find a replacement.

It’s hard to find someone with Ogumoro’s “institutional knowledge,” Taitano said. She has been with the zoning office since 2008.

“We must ensure the smooth operation of the zoning office,” he added.

In her letter to the board, Ogumoro said her resignation will take effect on Dec. 16, but she intends to go on leave starting Dec. 3.

But Variety learned that Ogumoro is still reporting for work and has assured the board that she will remain in her post for a public hearing on Dec. 18.

Taitano said if they cannot change Ogumoro’s mind, then the board will have to appoint an acting zoning administrator.

“Most likely we will appoint one of the senior staff members,” he added, referring to enforcement officer Yubert Alepuyo and planning officer Marciana Igitol.

He said they will also issue a job vacancy announcement once the position is officially vacated.
