NMC archive program gets $20K from feds

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Office of the CNMI Congressional Delegate) — The Office of Insular Affairs has announced the award of $20,000 in technical assistance program grant funding to the Northern Marianas College CNMI Archives to assist with the digital storage of its historical collection of regional newspapers.

“The ability to preserve these important records reflecting the rich history of the Northern Mariana Islands and our entire region is vital to the ability of future generations to connect with their past,” said U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan. “I thank Interior Assistant Secretary Tony Babauta for supporting this project.”

Congressman Sablan had expressed his strong support for this project to the assistant secretary.

The CNMI Archives is the primary repository for government documents within the Northern Marianas and contains a significant volume of historical materials relating to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and the Japanese, German, and Spanish eras of control.

The archives also houses the Pacific Collection which contains several thousand books and other materials pertaining to the Marianas and Pacific region.

The goal of the funded program is to store and make available electronically copies of local and regional newspapers in order to make the materials significantly more accessible and preserve their historical value for the CNMI community.
