NMC hires new information technology director

NORTHERN Marianas College yesterday announced the hiring of an information technology director, one of the positions highlighted in the show-cause letter from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

NMC President Sharon Y. Hart said Jonathan Liwag will assume his new post later this month.

“Jonathan’s professional experience and educational background will help us maintain the forward movement of our IT initiatives,” Hart said.

She added: “We wanted to move quickly to address the recommendations by ACCJC, so we ensured that the recruitment process for key positions at the college, including the chief financial officer and IT director, was prioritized.”

As the IT director, Liwag will provide leadership for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of information technology services and programs to support the learning mission of the college.

Part of this will involve the development of technology resources that will be used to enhance the educational experience of all NMC students.

Liwag will work closely with the distance learning education director at NMC to further the development and delivery of technology-supported instruction, including web-based courses, online learning resources, and curriculum redesign.

“I am looking forward to immersing myself in the post-secondary environment and working with other dedicated NMC team members,” Liwag said.

“It is crucial that we prepare and equip our students with real world 21st century technology skills to prepare them for successful careers,” he added.

Prior to joining NMC, Liwag worked as the network administrator for the CNMI Public School System, where he managed the day-to-day network operations.

In this capacity he also served as the technical escalations engineer for all computer technology and telecommunication-related matters.

Liwag was likewise involved in the development and revision of the technology education curriculum in PSS.

He has presented numerous professional development sessions for teachers to help them apply technology in the classrooms.

Liwag worked as a lead technical manager for AT&T Global Services in California for more than 10 years.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in management information systems and his master’s degree in leadership and organizational studies from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California.

He also earned several Cisco certifications in the past to validate him as a network engineer with the ability and experience to plan, implement, verify and troubleshoot local and wide-area enterprise networks.
