Some construction projects don’t have zoning permit

THERE are construction activities on island that have no permit from the Zoning Office, Zoning Administrator Therese Ogumoro said.

This violation was discovered during a routine site inspection by zoning enforcement officers, she added.

Violators said they were not aware of the zoning requirements, but according to Ogumoro, “I doubt that because the contractors have been here for a long time.”

She said they gave violators courtesy notices and ordered them to cease and desist their construction activity.

If the contractors fail to heed the notice, they will be fined up to $1,000 a day, she said, adding that the Zoning Office will also issue a final warning.

Other complaints received by the Zoning Office are about abandoned and junk vehicles in the villages.

The Zoning Office usually tags these junk cars with stickers indicating that the vehicles must be removed.

There are also complaints about the smell and fumes emanating from auto repair shops, Ogumoro said.
