Tourists sickened after entering public restroom on Beach Road

TWO Korean tourists who wanted to use a public restroom in Susupe ended up fleeing from it while vomiting, Variety learned.

The incident happened on Dec. 20 in the beach area near Borja Funeral Home where Maryann Arriola and her family were attending a family event.

“I was so embarrassed because I was the one who gave them direction to the public restroom,” Arriola said.

She said her daughter then transported the tourists to Saipan World Resort.

“They were disgusted because the smell in the restroom was so horrible,” she told Variety.

This reporter visited it yesterday and learned that there was no water in the restroom. The toilet bowls were stained with brownish and yellow discharge. Litter covered the floor.

Arriola said there should be an effort to regularly maintain public restrooms, especially in areas that tourists frequent.

“Tourism is now the only industry on our island. We should take care of it and promote it,” she said.

She is hopeful that the administration and the Legislature will do something to maintain the cleanliness of such public restrooms.

Perhaps businesses or community organizations can be asked to “adopt” public restrooms, she added.
