Reyes has donated salary to scholarship since 2001

SENATOR Pete P. Reyes has been donating his salary as a lawmaker to the CNMI Scholarship Office for the past 14 years.

Reyes said he started donating his salary in 2001 and has made a total contribution of $550,200 for scholarships.

A lawmaker’s annual salary amounts to $39,300.

A retiree, Reyes said he was the one who took advantage of his bill which became Public Law 10-88 which authorizing retirees to waive their salaries and re-appropriate it for scholarship purposes.

The Scholarship Office provides financial assistance to eligible students in the CNMI.

“At that time no funding was available to assist the students and one way to do that was to ask members who were already eligible to retire to contribute their salary to the Scholarship program,” Reyes said in an interview yesterday.

He chose to keep his retirement pay so he could donate his salary for scholarships.

Reyes served the government for a total of 44 years — 23 years as a lawmaker and 21 years as a government employee.

He served three terms in the House from 1992-1998 and four terms in the Senate from 1998 to 2015. He never lost an election.
