Senate confirms Esther Yatar as election board member

THE Senate has confirmed the appointment of Esther Yatar as a member of the Commonwealth Election Commission board.

All eight members voted to confirm Yatar who was not around when the Senate approved her appointment, Thursday.

Sen. Teresita Santos abstained because she said she has relatives working for the municipal government of Rota which employsYatar as human resource manager.

Santos said if not for this conflict of interest, she would have voted to support Yatar’s appointment.

Sen. Paul Manglona voted yes but with reservations as he expressed some concerns about Rota’s election process.

He said there had been complaints in the past about elections on Rota and the manner in which they were conducted.

He said there had also been complaints about the names of voters being deleted from the official list.

Manglona said he wants Yatar to look at these issues and make sure that they are addressed.

The Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations conducted a public hearing on Yatar’s appointment, Wednesday, on Rota.

The committee chairman, Sen. Frank Cruz, said Yatar is qualified to serve as a member of the election board.
