Acting Saipan mayor happy for same-sex couples

LIKE most island residents, Saipan Mayor Antonia Tudela is a Catholic but she officiates at same-sex marriages because she doesn’t want to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

“I believe that God made us the way we are so what can I say?”

Besides, she added, the law allows same-sex marriages. As acting mayor, she has already officiated at two same-sex marriages, and she said she is happy for same-sex couples who want to “tie the knot.”

As of Dec. 13, the Saipan mayor’s office had administered 25 same-sex marriages since July 2015, and 10 more are scheduled before the end of this year, the mayor’s marriage coordinator Barbara “Bobbie” Yamada said.

She said they officiated at 12 same-sex marriages last year, adding that most of the couples were Chinese, but there were also Koreans and Filipinos.
