BOARD of Education member Florine M. Hofschneider says education may be affected if the proposed live-fire ranges and training areas on Tinian under the CNMI Joint Military Training are implemented.

“BOE should study thoroughly the CJMT environmental impact study on the proposed live-fire ranges of the U.S. Department of the Navy,” she said.

Hofschneider said the noise factor from these activities will have a significant impact on classroom activities and the learning environment of the elementary and secondary schools on Tinian as well as the schools in Dandan, Koblerville, San Antonio and Saipan Southern High School.

“My appeal is for the board to put a team together to study the EIS from the Navy and to tell the board what it means to the students as far as the learning environment is concerned,” Hofschneider said during a meeting of the BOE committee on the Public School System’s capital improvement projects.

She said the goal is to make sure that the schools continue to be conducive to learning.
