SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang on Monday said the 2017 Liberation Committee has extended until June 26 the deadline for the submission of applications for the Fourth of July float competition.

The original deadline was June 19, but the mayor said they want more participants.

The application fee is $100, and the prizes are $4,000 for first place, $3,000, second place; $2,000, third place; and $1,000 for fourth place

As of June 19, Apatang said they had eight float applicants.

“We are expecting about 15 to 20 because government agencies will also take part in the parade,” he said, adding that his and the governor’s offices will have their own floats.

Apatang said they will brief all float parade participants on June 28 at his office.

The mayor is hoping that the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation will pass the $150,000 appropriation bill to support this year’s Liberation festivities.

“I am confident they will approve that measure in their session today [Tuesday]” he said, adding that the legislative delegation has been very supportive of the mayor’s office.

Apatang said they have already completed preparations for the Liberation activity site at the Garapan Fishing Base and are ready for the opening of the event this Saturday.

This week, he said, logistics and the other committees will finalize the program for the 11-day event.
