Torres to serve on National Governors Association’s health panel

GOVERNOR Ralph D.L.G. Torres will serve as a member of the National Governors Association’s Health and Human Services Committee.

In a statement, he said:

“I chose to serve on the Health and Human Services Committee because as governors, we will be in effective positions to influence federal health care legislation. The CNMI’s healthcare system, as in most of the other U.S. territories, faces major challenges in the areas of access, financing, and labor. I have always made health-care policy a priority since my time in the CNMI Senate, when I was chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee. I will continue to advocate for reforms to our Medicaid system, which affects many of our families in terms of their ability to pay for health care. I will also continue to advocate for our hospital and clinics, so they can continue to get the nurses and technical workers they need. I look forward to serving with my fellow governors.”

The NGA’s Health and Human Services Committee handles issues related to health care, particularly as they relate to Medicaid, and federal-state safety-net programs such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and other social services. Members of the committee ensure that the governors’ views are represented in the shaping of federal policy.
