Mayor Apatang is looking for new office with bigger parking area

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang said they are planning to move to another location where there is enough parking space for their vehicles and heavy equipment.

“We don’t have enough room for our vehicles right now,” he said. The mayor’s office is on the second floor of Ladera Center in Oleai on Beach Road.

He said they will relocate to an area more accessible to the public.

“We are looking at Susupe,” he said, adding they have found a place near Ada Gym which also has a warehouse where they can park their vehicles.

On Wednesday, the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council headed by Chairman Luis John Castro met with Apatang and his special assistant Henry Hofschneider to discuss their plan to construct a building that will house the mayor and municipal council’s offices.

“We want to ensure that we are on the same page with our plan to build a municipal complex,” Hofschneider said, adding that the proposed building will be located at the former municipal council building and mayor’s nursery adjacent to the U.S. Post Office in Chalan Kanoa.

In June, the municipal council conducted a conference on the construction of its new building.

The current building was damaged by Typhoon Soudelor in 2015, but the municipal council was able to secure $466,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build a new one. The municipal council has to put up 10 percent of the total cost.

Hofschneider said the mayor’s office was able to secure $93,000 from FEMA for the repair of the heavy-equipment shop.

He said they will be working with the municipal council in collaboration with the Department of Public Works to come up with the design of the new municipal complex.
