Ruben Corpuz gets 30 years for sexual abuse of a minor

A 40-year-old man from Kagman will serve 30 years in prison after pleading guilty on Tuesday to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.

Superior Court Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio sentenced Ruben Atalig Corpuz Jr. to 45 years of imprisonment but with 15 years suspended. He will serve a total of 30 years in prison and will serve the sentence day by day without the possibility of parole.

In the change-of-plea hearing, Corpuz was represented by Assistant Public Defender Jamal Saleh while Assistant Attorney General Betsy Weintraub appeared for the government.

Asked for comment after the hearing, Weintraub said, “I’m glad we were able to reach a fair and just settlement in this case that spared the victim and her family from having to endure a trial.”

The victim, Weintraub said, has a hard road ahead, but now she can move forward with her life and begin the healing process.

The victim told authorities that Corpuz had been forcing her into having sexual intercourse with him since she was 13 years old.

She said she never told her mother about the assault because she was scared of Corpuz.

On Nov. 22, 2016, she gave birth to a premature baby. On the same day, Corpuz waived his right to an attorney and admitted to police that he did have sexual intercourse with the then-17-year-old victim.
