Proposed municipal anthems will not divide islands, says Castro

WHEN the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council introduced the ordinance designating official anthems for Saipan and the Northern Islands, there was no intention to divide the islands, council chairman John Luis Castro said.

“One thing we don’t want is division in the community,” he added.

The council wants to designate “O Petlas I Pasifiko” as the official anthem of Saipan, and “Faluw Kka Efang” as the official anthem for the Northern Islands.

“We are not trying to change the commonwealth anthem,” Castro said, adding that the council is still soliciting public comments on the proposal.

“The discussion has been healthy and people are giving us feedback,” he said.

In August, Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres approved a local measure to officially recognize “I Tano-Mami” as the official anthem of Rota.

“I Tano-Mami” was written and composed by Oscar Atalig Mendiola and was recorded by Melchor Atalig Mendiola.
