DPL has 80 active leases

THE Department of Public Lands has 80 active land leases throughout the CNMI.

But DPL Secretary Marianne Concepcion Teregeyo said some of these leases will be expiring soon and it may be in the best interest of the department and its beneficiaries, the people of Northern Marianas descent, to renew these leases.

Among the leases that will expire soon is Kan Pacific’s in Marpi. The lease is expiring in April 2018.

In her letter to Rep. Alice Igitol, chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Teregeyo also expressed her opposition to House Bill 20-81, which would restrict future public land leases pending completion of the comprehensive land-use plan. The bill was introduced by Rep. Larry Deleon Guerrero.

Teregeyo said DPL is in the process of updating its land-use plan.

She said if everything goes smoothly, it would take at least a year from inception to see a finished plan.

The land-use plan would set the guidelines for future use of land properties consistent with the current use, she said.

Teregeyo said to restrict DPL from doing new land leases in developed areas would not be beneficial as it would not affect the outcome of the land use-plan.
