Top seeds prevail in Tan Holdings mixed doubles

TOP-SEEDED players came out victorious in the mixed doubles matches of the 9th Annual Tan Holdings Tennis Classic at the Fiesta Resort & Spa on Sunday.

No. 1 Maria Gregoire who teamed up with Richard Steele, finally brought home a title after struggling in the girls’ singles matches. She and Steele broke out of the tie in the first set then, went on to dominate her brother Anthony who teamed up with Hye Jin Eliot, 7-6(0), 6-3 to take the mixed doubles 4 title.

Gregoire and Steele cruised to the finals over Ami Miyawaki and Randy Steele, 6-3, 6-1 in the semis.

Eliot and Anthony Gregoire made it to the finals by dominating Chiharu Sato and Kohsuke Sato, 6-1, 4-0 in the quarter finals, and No. 2 Grace Choi and AJ Hudkins, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in the semis.

In the mixed doubles 5, top-seeded Maria Isabel Heras who teamed up with Bobby Cruz also lived up to high expectations, beating No. 2 Malika Miyawaki and Moris Villanueva in a tie-breaker, 6-0, 3-6, 10-8.

After trying to take it easy against Conatsu Kaga and Ken Song in the first set of semi finals, Heras and Cruz finished them off, 7-6(2), 6-0 to clinch the finals.

Miyawaki and Villanueva dominated Tania Tan and Michael Ren, 6-1, 6-2 in the semis.

In the mixed doubles 40, No. 1 Chie Sato and Ken Imaya smooth sailed to victory over Marivic Dunlop and Nicky Nichols, 6-0, 6-1 in the semis, and No. 2 Lydia Tan and Sam Lai, 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.

Tan and Lai prevailed over Otobe Mizuyo and Don L. Castillo, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 in the semis.

The only top seed that didn’t make it to the finals in mixed doubles was Sally Lee who teamed up with George Lai. They lost finals slot to Lydia Tan and David Lai who beat them, 6-4, 6-2.

But Tan and Lai bowed to Marivic Dunlop and Donn Dunlop in a tie-breaker, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 to take the mixed doubles 50 title.
