NMI swimming eyeing team for Micronesian Games

THE NMI Swimming Federation will send a team to Micronesian Games that Yap is hosting from July 15 to 27.

NMISF President John Hirsh confirmed yesterday that they will send six to 10 swimmers to the regional sports event.

Variety was told that aside NMI’s paddling and table tennis groups are also preparing teams to the off-island event.

The Northern Marianas Athletics, the Mariana Islands Basketball Federation and the Saipan Baseball League have earlier confirmed participation in the Micronesian Games.

NMA development officer Elias Rangamar said yesterday they will soon begin with the qualifying leg at the Oleai Sports Complex’ track and field which will be ready for use in a week or two.

In basketball, he said, they have already scheduled tryouts for men and women.

The tryouts will be held at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in the following dates.

Women’s tryouts:

Monday Feb. 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday Feb. 10 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Men’s tryouts:

Saturday February 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Saturday Feb. 17 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Interested individuals must attend these sessions.

Northern Marianas residency rule is required.

Basketball players on Rota and Tinian will also have their respective selections.

In baseball, SBL development coordinator Tony Rogolifoi has earlier said that the three quarters of the SBL regular season will serve as part of the selection process for the Micronesian Games.

Once the CNMI National Baseball Team is completed, SBL league will have a break until the team comes back.

The other Micronesian Games sports in which the NMI will participate are volleyball, paddling, fishing, weightlifting, wrestling and micro-all-round.

The CNMI Weightlifting has also scheduled its own qualifier for 2018 Micronesian Games on February 17, Saturday, at the Latte Built-24-Hour Fitness and Nutrition Center.
