T8 Warriors win 1st March Against Cancer volleyball title

UNDER the grueling heat of the sun, the T8 Warriors came out on top out of 14 teams to win the championship crown in the 1st Lady Diann Torres Foundation & Northern Marianas College Volleyball Tournament last Saturday at NMC.

When it came down to the elimination round, the T8 Warriors stepped up their game outing each opponent in their path in a race to 25 points.

The T8 Warriors’ first match was against Bull Set whom they beat by a safe distance, 25-18.

T8 played smart using Alfredo Guevarra and Benjie Seman’s spiking ability to their advantage gaining back-to-back points quickly.

Bull Set fought back feeding off T8’s errors and using quick attacks to stay within reach but eventually lost, 25-18.

The T8 Warriors triumphed over Patch Me Outside with ease 25-12.

Wakanda, who was ranked number one in the tournament, was the T8 Warriors’ final match before heading onto the championship round.

It was a close match as both teams exchanged leads several times. Briana Valenton, Jerico Castro and Danny Borlain work as a team setting up Jerry Suarez for the spike finishes.

However T8 Warriors had an answer for every attack with well-timed blocks and sneaky returns to secure the win 25-22.

Straight off the Couch, who made it to the top 10, suddenly found their rhythm in the elimination round defeating Ace Team 25-16, Team Bodig 25-13 and Catch a Case in the Face 25-13 to reach the finals against T8 Warriors.

Despite Straight off the Couch’s journey, they failed to keep up with the T8 Warriors who built a comfortable lead to ease their way to victory, 25-20.

The T8 Warriors are led by team captain Mychal Omar and teammates Maria Olupomar, Leana Otiwii, JD Magofna, Alfredo Guevarra, Ryan Camacho and Benjie Seman.

“The outcome was better than expected. There were a total of 15 teams that participated, 12 of which made it to the elimination round in the afternoon,” stated Program Manager of the CNMI Area Health Education Center at NMC & Event Coordinator for the co-ed volleyball tournament Queanna Sablan.

The volleyball tournament was a fundraiser for the 2018 Marianas March Against Cancer.

“We are thankful for all the teams, volunteers, and spectators that came to support the volleyball tournament and the NMI Volleyball Association for lending us their equipment,” Sablan said.

“This was the first time that we have organized this event in support of the Marianas March Against Cancer and the help and support from the community was greatly appreciated,” she said.

“The presentation of the trophy will be held during NMC’s Charter Day Celebration, which will be held on April 13, 2018,” said Sablan. “The community is invited to the Charter Day festivities,” she added.

Upcoming fundraising events by NMC and Lady Diann Torres Foundation team include NMI Charter day and Brunch for a Cure.
