Ol’ Aces win Women’s Island-wide caging crown

AFTER an exciting three-game series for the 2018 Women’s Island-wide Basketball League title, it was the Ol’ Aces who proved their worth slipping past Fiesta Resort 47-41 during last Friday’s Game 3 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.

The Ol’Aces set the pace early in the first quarter.

Eleina and Annalei Santos kept aggressive as they scored the first four points and found their way to the foul line drawing the fouls for a few go-ahead buckets.

They also showed their strength on the defensive end as they kept Fiesta Resort’s shot opportunities to a minimum while Alliyah Fernandez exploded with seven points alone to aid in Ol’Aces’ 16-9 control.

Fiesta Resort managed to successfully shut down Ol’ Aces’ offense as only Annalei Santos could put up a shot. But was met with the same demise to keep them trailing behind by the end of the second canto 17-23.

The Ol’ Aces continued to lead in the third quarter.

Eleina Santos’ ability to drive to the hoop refueled the team’s momentum. Nana Watanabe seemed like the only player able to penetrate through the Ol’Aces defense putting up four points but the rest of the team failed to execute falling to a double digit gap.

Despite Fiesta Resort’s struggle, their persistency paid off during the final quarter.

Jan Travilla, who only made two points throughout the game, suddenly found her stroke draining eight points including an and-one play and a triple to quickly reduce the deficit back within single digits 33-41.

More misfortunes continued to fall upon Ol’Aces as their misses turned into buckets for Fiesta to close in 38-41 with less than three minutes left on the clock.

Ol’Aces’ constant attacks led to foul calls where Eleina Santos and Fernandez connected the much needed shots to secure the third and final game and the championship title 47-41.
