Fernandez bags 3 awards in Badminton Tournament

WINDY Fernandez is on a roll showcasing her skills as a badminton player.

She earned three separate championship titles in the Singles Women B, Mixed AB and Mixed BB categories during last weekend’s matches of the 2018 IT&E Badminton Tournament at the Tan Siu Lin Sports Complex.

Fernandez first nipped the AB Mixed championship title with teammate Ferdie Arago as they awaited their opponents Gary Bandoja and Hanna Choi in the finals round.

Fernandez and Arago made their way to the finals with confidence as they remained undefeated and just needed one more win to grasp the title. They gained the early lead in the first set as they stayed on their toes returning each shot made.

However Bandoja and Choi were not to be counted out as easily as they made a stunning comeback.

They kept up with Fernandez and Arago’s aggressive assault with smashes to keep them far back which gave them enough space to strike near the net for a few easy points. Fernandez and Arago tried to bounce back forcing a deuce but eventually fell to defeat grasping the first set 22-20.

Despite Bandoja and Choi’s strong start, Fernandez and Arago were quick to erase all hopes.

Fernandez and Arago were in total control of the second set leaving no time for their opponents to muster up another comeback taking the win by a distance 21-14.

More of the same was seen at the third and final set as they left Bandoja and Choi nearly scoreless 21-5 to claim the Mixed AB championship title.

Fernandez continued to show her worth as a partner as she and Cris Hilario snatched the Mixed B championship title.

They also shared a similar standing as they were undefeated moving into the finals where they faced Bandoja and Anette Ta.

Bandoja and Ta gave a good fight forcing the first set over the 21 game-point but still ended up on the losing side 20-22. They did triumph in the second set 21-19 forcing a third set but could not keep up with Fernandez and Hilario’s efficiency as they dominated by a huge margin 21-9 to take the Mixed B championship title.

Fernandez did not stop there as she was just as dominant individually bagging the Women’s B Singles title.

Loyda Ito made her way back to the top for the rematch after losing to Fernandez early in the first round but suffered the same results.

No matter what Ito threw at her, Fernandez had an answer on the other end keeping a tight grip on the lead. Fernandez mixed up her game plan but going in for the quick kill while adding a few smashes to keep the possession alive long enough for Ito to commit the error losing the first set 21-15.

Ito managed to pick up the pace at the second set giving Fernandez a good scare but only delayed the inevitable losing 17-21 and handing Fernandez her third championship title over the weekend.
