Schorr, Woo vie men singles title in White-Coconut Classic

TOP-SEEDED Robbie Schorr defeated Jeff Race on Sunday to clinch the finals berth in the 2019 White-Coconut Classic’s men’s singles at the American Memorial Park hard court.

Female players Malika Miyawaki and Tania Tan “begged” to join the men’s singles matches. Also in the U16 boys, female player Maria Gregoire insisted to play.

After an easy win over Miyawaki, 6-1, 6-0, Schorr faced his trainer, Race and defeated him, 6-3, 6-3 to secure the finals slot.

Today at 9:30 a.m., Schorr will face No. 2 Jimin Woo who dominated No. 4 Sean Lee, 6-2, 6-4.

Woo defeated Vincent Tudela, 6-3, 6-3 while Race nearly swept Gary Ramsey, 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter finals.

In the U16 boys’ singles, No. 1 Ji Hwan Ryu and No. 2 Daniel Kang secured the finals slot with decisive semis wins over their respective foes.

Ryu lived up to expectation by dominating No. 4 Kim, 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday while Kang nearly swept No. 3 Maria Gregoire, 6-3, 6-1.

Kang made it to the semis with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Eugene Park while Gregoire beat Isaac Heo, 6-3, 6-1.

In the mixed doubles, No. 1 seeded Vincent Tudela and Juncheol Hwang will face the tandem of No. 3 Schorr and Daniel Heo in the finals at 2 p.m.

Tudela and Hwang defeated No. 4 Jun Wang and Tania Tan, 6-2, 7-5 while Schorr and Heo beat No. 2 Andrew Chung and Jimin Woo, 6-3, 6-1.

Woo and Chung made it to the semis over Kang and Ye Jin Seon, 7-5, 6-3 while Tudela and Hwang beat Race and Hoo Wang, 7-5, 6-3.

Hwang also played and seeded No. 1 in the U12 boys singles where he swept Wataru Kadokura, 6-0, 6-0 to clinch final slot.

He will face June Yu who beat Takeru Jim, 6-4, 6-4.
