Schorr rules White-Coconut Classics men’s singles

TOPSEEDED Robbie Schorr outlasted No. 2 Jimin Woo to win the men’s singles title of the 2019 White-Coconut Classic at the American Memorial Park hard court on Monday.

Woo doubled his aggressiveness and went close to getting even in the second set but Schorr, with his usual style of gauging the approaching ball with his left hand, hit returns to stay in control, leading to his 6-3, 7-6 win to claim the men’s singles title.

Scorr made it to the finals by defeating No. 3 Jeff Race, 6-3, 6-3 in the semis, and Malika Miyawaki, 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter finals.

Woo climbed to the finals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 4 Sean Lee, 6-2, 6-4 in the semis and Vincent Tudela, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter finals.

Lee took the main consolation with a walk over again Race, while Tudela beat Miyawaki, 6-3, 6-3; and Gerald Boyer, beat Allan Lee, 6-3, 6-4.

In the U16 boys’ singles, No. 2 Daniel Kang upset Ji Hwan Ryu in a super tie-breaker, 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 to win the title.

Kang reached the finals with an easy win over No. 3 Maria Gregoire, 6-1, 6-1 while Ryu beat No. 4 Andy Kim, 6-4, 6-3 in the semis.

In the U14 boys singles, No. 1 David Kwon lived up to expectations dominating unseeded Andrew Chung, 6-0, 6-1.

No. 1 Juncheon Hwang also dominated June Yu, 6-1-6-1 to take the U12 boys’ singles crown. Yu who was seeded No. 1 in the U10 boys’ single secured the title over Lina Tsukagoshi, 6-1.

In the U14 girls’ single, No. 1Helen Kim swept her foes to win the title. She blanked Yebin Shin, 6-0, 6-0 in the finals. Before that, she defeated No. 2 Serin Chung, 6-4, 6-4.

In the U12 girls’ singles Hoo Wang defeated Dain Lee, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.
