Race, Mayuko claim Mixed Doubles Open

JEFF Race and Mayuko had to overcome tough opponents throughout their journey to the Mixed Doubles Open title of the 19th Pacific Islands Club Tennis Championships which held their championship match last Sunday at PIC.

The coach himself Jeff Race proved that his students still have a lot to learn from the long time veteran as he and Mayuko fought hard to get into the finals.

It did not look good for the older competitors at first as they suffered losing the first set over Gregoire and Chung 4-6. But some shared words, the team fought back hard to even the score 7-6 forcing a final set of play.

Both teams played well but in the end it was Race and Mayuko that triumphed as their quick returns did not give Gregoire and Chung the chance to react either forcing the ball down near the net or over them to gain the points and secure the win 10-7.

The finals was a much more intense battle as Race and Mayuko were up against 3-time CNMI Student Athlete of the Year Robbie Schorr and teammate Marivic. The three-hour battle was a test of skill more than anything. Schorr’s skill were equal to that of a veteran as his placements and precision attacks kept Race and Mayuko on their toes. Although Race and Mayuko played equally well, it was team Schorr and Marivic that claimed the first set 6-4.

Race and Mayuko bounced back, however, during the second set. Their much more aggressive take forced Schorr and Marivic to return with lobs which Race and Mayuko executed well with quick approach to catch their opponents off guard taking the win 6-3.

A few double faults extended the game but nonetheless had to come to an end. Race and Mayuko’s continuous pressure worked in their favor as Schorr and Marivic failed to defend their end losing the final set 7-5 and bowing to his Coach Race and Mayuko for the Mixed Doubles Open title.

Another long battle was seen last Sunday with Irin Chung claiming the Junior Girls 12 & under title.

Chung and opponent Dana Lee played as equals putting up a three-set game but it was Chung who triumphed 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 to take the title.
