Lakay pulls off stunning victory against Real Deal, secures championship spot

LAKAY has shown that in the sport of basketball, anything can happen, as the underdogs outhustled the number one ranked Real Deal in bracket B 77-68 during last Saturday’s semifinals game of the 2019 Civic Basketball League held at the Civic Center basketball court.

Real Deal established dominance early in the game as they as they left Lakay in the dust with consistency. Zack Diaz wreaked havoc from underneath the rim putting up four points while adding extra damage drawing fouls for a few easy points from the line. With the help of Coby Santos’ constant attack and Franko Bondoc’s slashes inside, they pushed a safe double digit distance 14-4 in the first five minutes of the game.

But after a timely break, Lakay found their rhythm.

Ronald Bernardo ignited the run with reverse layups putting up six points alone while Shane Deleon Guerrero, RenRen Gaviola and Dixon Kwon shared a bucket each to reduce the deficit 16-22.

Lakay’s momentum continued to shine as they moved on to the second quarter as they grabbed the lead. Junie Camacho joined the scoreboard connecting a triple with two more points from the free throw line alongside Dan Toribio’s five points to give the team a breather 32-30.

Real Deal tried to bounce back but with Santos on lockdown by the man-to-man pressure, Preston Basa tried to take matters into his own hands but could not get the stroke needed from beyond the arc only firing up seven points. Eric Basa and Kevin Kabriel added some extra firepower but still trailed 49-52 by the end of the third canto.

No matter what Real Deal did they could not put up a stop to Lakay’s offensive output.

Along with great defense, Lakay managed to turn successful steals into finishes on the other end. Bernardo continued to deliver at the end of dropping seven points while Gaviola, DLG and Yelyel Manalo kept the pressure going long enough to outscore Real Deal 77-68 handing them their very first loss and eliminating them in the process to secure their seat in their respective bracket championship.

DC 80, Brabu 41

DC, the other top ranked team has lived up to the expectation as they forced Brabu to give up at the third quarter after gaining a 40-point lead to secure their seat in the finals of their respective bracket.

It was decided from the start as DC had almost their entire roster lighting up the scoreboard. Sean Robasto led the pack contributing six points while Jack Aranda, Jaymark DeGuzman, Matt Duenas and Pao Rafols shared two buckets apiece to earn the 31-15 spread.

Even with Fred Pelisamen exploding with eight points at the second canto trying to shed some light for Brabu, However DC never hit the brakes as they continue to fire at will.

Gerald Flores took over the wheel with six points while DeGuzman powered through the third canto to expand the deficit to 40 points before the rain hit the pavement. Despite the opportunity to fight another day, Brabu decided to call it quits and hand the win to DC 80-41.
