Atalig tops Joeten
Memorial Golf Classic

JJ ATALIG started really well beating his toughest competitor Jin Feng Chun in their game opener during the 2019 Joeten Memorial Golf Classic on Saturday at the LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort’s east course.

Atalig beat Jin in their opening game in Hole Nos. 4 and 5 to stay ahead.

Jin got even towards the end of the front nine which he completed with a 1-under par 35 beating Atalig by three strokes.

Atalig managed to keep pace as they proceeded to the back nine sinking consecutive par shots. But with a double bogey in Hole No. 1 Atalig fell behind.

“I think the wind played the big factor on that No. 1 that caused the double bogey. It’s the weather but just on that hole,” Atalig told Variety in an interview after the game.

He came back and had my last putt to stay tie with Jin.

The 20-footer putt made the difference.

“I put it in. He missed the birdie,” he said.

And that earned him this year’s title in the championship flight of the tournament finishing the game with a 72.

Atalig was also one of those who shot an eagle in the tournament.

Taking the third place was Joe Kamikaze Camacho who had 1-over par 73, and fourth place, Paul Kaipat with a 75.

Also making it in the top six were Uriah Perez who shot an 80 and Sebastian Camacho, 86.

Over 100 local golfers participated in the event.

Variety will report the other flight results on Thursday.
