Lakay eliminates Loving Hands, faces Marianas Variety in finale

LAKAY continues to shock spectators and players alike as they rallied past Loving Hands in the 4th quarter of the semifinals match to snatch the win 69-66 and secure a seat in the finals where they will face Marianas Variety for the 2019 Civic Basketball League championship title.

Last Saturday at the Civic Center basketball court, Loving Hands nearly called game as they held control for the first three quarters.

They managed to set the tone early as their aggressive approach constantly broke through Lakay’s defense. Jun Javier used his body inside the paint outmuscling defenders to pick up five points along with Jude Tengco and Jun Tabora’s combined 11 points to grasp the lead.

Lakay kept up with the pace with Yeyel Manalo at the frontline with six points supported by Ren Gaviola, Mike Cabanas and Ronald Bernardo but could not stop Loving Hands’ attack trailing behind 17-24.

Loving Hands kept the fuel burning at the second canto as Jun Tabora continued to knock down his shots while Junior Tabora joined in the scoreboard with five points apiece.

After the halftime break Lakay returned more focused than ever as they slowly crept back. It was their defensive efforts that fed their fire as they turned each turnover into a successful bucket on the other end. Gaviola took advantage of Loving Hands with speed as he sprinted from end to end with two fast break plays while adding a shot from behind the three-point line to reduce the gap. He also showcased his vision as he slipped the ball inside with continuous drop passes feeding Bernardo who finished the third quarter with eight points. With the added range from Donnel Isip and Kwon connecting a triple each, Lakay earned their very first lead of the night 49-39.

Loving Hands tried to use their height to overpower Lakay and nearly killed their momentum but their inability to connect the crucial shots kept them from regaining control. They were forced to foul in order to stop the clock but Manalo’s reliable stroke from the free-throw line proved valuable sinking five points from the line while added three more buckets to secure the win 69-66 securing their spot in the finals.

Lakay will be facing Marianas Variety for the championship title this Saturday at the Civic Center basketball court.
