NMI soccer teams score first wins

THE NMI Men’s All Stars and the NMI U18 boys defeated Beijing 97 United FC and Elite Core FC in their respective match-ups, 3-2 and 4-3, in the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association invitational tournament on Saturday evening at the Koblerville soccer field.

Against the Elite Core FC, the NMI U18 boys took the early lead as Taka Borja scored from a rebound free kick. After 26 minutes of play, NMI U18 player John Michael Rojas scored through another rebound pass. At the 38- and 40-minute marks, Elite Core FC player Yifan Zhang scored two goals to tie the game. NMI U18 player Joshua Deleon scored in the 43-minute mark to regain the lead. Twenty minutes later, Elite Core FC player Zhenxing Wang scored a goal to again tie the game. But NMI U18 player Oliver Fajardo scored a clutch goal to secure victory for the home team.

“We are trying to improve our mistakes,” said U18 coach Mita, adding that they are preparing

for the Asian tournament which will start on Nov. 2.

In the second game, the NMI Men’s All-Stars drew first blood against Beijing 97 United FC with Jambor Martin scoring a goal after four minutes of play.

A minute later, Beijing 97 replied with a long-shot goal by Xiong Zhe Li. Daniel Agulto scored the NMI’s second goal to take the lead. Later in the second half, Martin again scored from a rebound pass. Beijing equalized, but the NMI All Stars pulled ahead again and thanks to their tight defense, Beijing had no answer in the last 50 minutes of the game.
