MJD Warriors take SBA Thursday Division title

DREW’S MJD Warriors claimed this year’s SBA Budweiser Open 8-Ball League Thursday Division championship on Thursday after defeating Brannon’s DECM Wizards, 9-5, at Brannon’s Bar & Grill.

The Warriors did not have a smooth sail to victory as they had to work their way due to the Wizards’ strong start. Roger Espiritu and Senen Pangilinan paired up to triumph in the opening round of the Partners 8-Ball match while Albert and Lito Pangilinan completed the two-win sweep.

But the Warriors quickly fired back. Merven Sahagun was the first to draw blood but Senen Pangilinan also notched a win in the second round to maintain the lead. However, the rest of the Wizards could not keep up the run as Warriors’ Rey Pinangay and Roel Barretto stepped up and claimed the remaining two rounds to even the score 3-3.

Both teams gave it their all, splitting the second Partners 8-Ball match. But when it came to the one-on-one bouts, the Warriors had the upper hand with Sahagun, Pinangay and Barretto scoring a 3-1 run to snatch the lead, 7-5. The Wizards tried to hang on but the Warriors kept their fuel burning with Sahagun and Jerry Soriano claiming the last two wins needed to secure the title, 9-5.

The 9Eleven Predators also shared the spotlight as they came out victorious in the consolation match against 9Eleven Club 88 BlackBall, 9-6.

BlackBall was the first to draw blood, sweeping the opening match 2-0. But in the Singles 8-Ball match, the Predators fired back at with a 3-1 run to tie the match 3-3. BlackBall regained control with another two-win sweep but the Predators had their own 3-1 run for a 6-6 deadlock.

When it came down to the wire, the Predators capitalized on their clutch moments thanks to Rolly Villanueva, Juancho Mendoza and Jomar Enriquez who bagged three straight wins to secure a 9-6 victory and the third place for the Predators.
