Saipan Adventure hands Tsingtao Boyz their first loss

THE Tsingtao Boyz’s winning streak was finally broken in the 2019 One Pacific Promotional Basketball League sponsored by Tsingtao Beer as they suffered their first loss in the hands of Saipan Adventure in a nail-biting game on Friday at the Civic Center basketball court.

It was a close battle from start to finish as several lead exchanges were made. The Tsingtao Boyz tried to stay in control with teamwork playing a huge role. Demonteverde and Peter Ariar started the first quarter with quick shots to put up four points apiece. But Saipan Adventure matched the Boyz’s performance with Randy Mungcal and Flores leading the run. Tsingtao’s Jandoc then joined in the fray with five points to allow his team to stay in front 18-17.

The second canto was no different as the Boyz continued to stay afloat thanks to Jandoc’s consistency, carrying six points while Saipan Adventure’s Jun Alipio added some firepower from underneath the rim as his team stayed close behind.

After the halftime break the relentless efforts of Saipan Adventure were finally rewarded as Almario put in six points while the rest of his team-mates contributed a few shots to give Saipan Adventure the lead for the first time in the game, 52-51.

It came down to the final quarter as both teams went all-out to seal the deal. Tsingtao’s Gerald Rivera, who hardly made an impact throughout the first three quarters, finally found his rhythm, using his strength to get inside for six points alongside Demonteverde to give their team the advantage. However, Saipan Adventure’s Alex Ocampo came out from the dark to explode with five points in crunch time. The score was tied at 71-71 with less than a minute left on the clock.

Luckily for Saipan Adventure, it had the possession and its players smartly moved the ball to create openings. Mungcal held the ball last and was able to draw the foul to get himself on the free throw line. He sank both and time ran out for the Tsingtao Boyz who suffered their first defeat in the tournament.
