As’Guardians, D’Challenger score debut wins in volleyball tourney

THE As’Guardians and D’Challenger were among the four teams that came out victorious in the 2019 Avengers Volleyball League tournament Wednesday at Gilbert C. Ada Gym whose floor was newly repainted.

The As’Guardians had the most exciting matchup of the night as they had to play all three sets to defeat Straight Outta Nowhere: 25-23, 18-25, 15-10.

The As’Guardians played well as a team with Mike Omar and RJ Litulumar in the frontline, finishing off each possession with smart tip-ins and spikes to gain the edge. With the help of Don Cabrera, Maria Olupomar and Kaystone Norech, the As’Guardians managed to hold onto the lead throughout most of the first set. However, as soon as they started to lose touch Straight Outta Nowhere took advantage and made its way back. Josh Andrews used his height to pick apart the defense with Toni Yamada and Charnessa Lizama supporting from all ends of the floor to reduce the deficit to just one point.

Luckily for the As’Guardians, Omar was able to secure the first-set win, 25-23, with a quick and smart tap over the net to catch Straight Outta Nowhere off guard.

But Straight Outta Nowhere was not going down without a fight and returned to the second set stronger than ever. Communication was the key as the players had each other’s back and used the three-touch rule to full use to stay ahead. The As’Guardians tried to keep up but their errors kept them behind. They lost the second set 18-25.

Both teams gave it their all in the third and final set, but it was the As’Guardians who stepped up in crunch time. The early attacks with well-placed spikes were more than enough to allow the team to stay in control despite Straight Outta Nowhere clinging on. The As’Guardians held onto the lead to eventually secure a 15-10 victory.

D’Challenger also joined the winner’s circle after trouncing Iron Spike in two sets, 25-9, 25-13.

The other two teams that notched victories were the Black Panther which took down The Revengers 25-15, 25-16; and the Ol’Aces who bested We Are Groot, 25-22, 25-20.
