Tsingtao Boyz beat Pardz Ballers in OT

THE Tsingtao Boyz fought until their proverbial last breath to claim a slot in the finals of the 2019 One Pacific Promotional Basketball League sponsored by Tsingtao Beer after defeating the Pardz Ballers 102-98 in overtime on Wednesday at the Civic Center basketball court.

It felt like a championship match already as both teams exchanged leads throughout the entire game. The Ballers played strong with Joseph Galulu coming off the bench with eight points in the first quarter to give his team the lead, 21-16.

But the Boyz fought back, pushing through for the bucket from the inside, and constantly sending Jetzen Jandoc to the line where he chipped the deficit away. Luckily for the Ballers, Jose and Rocyl Ritual kept the team’s momentum burning with nine and 11 points respectively to maintain the lead, 45-35.

The Boyz continued to give it their all as Ed Pangelinan contributed three triples to reduce the gap within a single digit by the end of the third quarter. Pangelinan fired two more from beyond the arc at the start of the final quarter to make it anyone’s ballgame.

For their part, Jose and Ritual kept the Ballers’ hopes alive with the score tied, 78-78, and only a few minutes left on the clock.

Ritual tried to seal the deal with a clutch triple but it was quickly answered back by Pangelinan with a triple of his own. Ritual added one more bucket, but Tsingtao’s Peter Ariar saved the day with a quick shot to tie the game once again, 83-83, and send it into overtime.

The Ballers’ thirst for the victory was evident, but they were a little too eager and kept committing fouls which gave the Boyz an opportunity to take the lead through free throw attempts. Soon, the Ballers’ JR Barrios, big man Ronald Romo, Jose and Ritual all fouled out.

Meanwhile, the Boyz continued to keep their heads up and erected a strong defensive wall which forced a few turnovers. During the last 30 seconds on the clock they were able to find Joseph Torres open at the high corner from where he sank a three-point shot that reduced the gap to two points.

The Boyz kept the ball moving, forcing the Ballers to commit a foul in order to stop the clock. Jess Pineda was the Boyz’ go-to option on the line as he made his free throws to secure a 102-98 victory for his team, and a slot in the finals.
