Schmidt named MVP

DOUGLAS Schmidt’s efforts on the offensive and defensive ends of the court were more than enough to lead the Saipan Vegas Aces to an undefeated record and the championship of the first AK-Toyota Marianas International Basketball League on Sunday at the Marianas High School gym.

He was named regular season MVP, and the Glove awardee for averaging 7.4 steals per game. As a defender, his speed played a huge role as he was able to reach, anticipate and disrupt nearly every single play made by the opposing team. In game 1 of the best-of-three championship series against the IT&E Explorers, he had four steals, and in the decisive game 2 he had 10 steals.

His speed was also a factor on the offensive end as he blasted through defenders with ease for the easy finish that included a high percentage from the three-point line. His outstanding court-vision was undeniable as he led the league with 7.3 assists per game. In addition, he averaged 15.8 points and 7.5. rebounds per game.

Joining Schmidt in the Mythical Five were IT&E Explorers’ Ehroll Peredo, The Game Elite’s Mak Mintac, Mystique BBQ Grillers’ Jetzen Jandoc and Saipan Vegas’ Coby Santos.

The other individual awardees were TanHoldings Stingrays’ Michael Torregosa who led the league in rebounds with 12.8 per game for which he received the Board Master Award; Bridge Capital All-Stars’ Eric Leon Guerrero, the Swat Chief who averaged 1.1 blocks per game; and The Game Elite’s Mak Mintac as the Scoring King who averaged 28.9 points per game.
