Asai, Sasamoto brothers top spearfishing tilt

FELIX Sasamoto, Morito Asai, and Greg Sasamoto hauled 34.8 lbs of fish yesterday to win the Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club’s 4th Annual Spearfishing Christmas Fun Competition at Garapan Fishing Base.

CruzThey bested team John Kim, Manny Camacho, and Isidro Castro’s 31.38 lb catch, putting them in second place. Also known as team Bantalan Boyz, Asai’s group garnered unicornfish, surgeonfish, blacksnappers, and parrotfish to win the $150 cash prize.

David Camacho, Tony Robert, and 14-year-old Jason Camacho pulled to third place with 23.48 lbs of parrotfish, mafuti, spadefish, and goatfish.

Ranking next to them were Masahiro Yokoyama, Julian Salalica and Jose Sablan, whose catch weighed in at 23.08 lbs. Other participants included: Steven Igisaiar, Stanley Aldan and Jack Namaule (19.72 lbs), James Kim and Kai Staal (7.56 lbs), Jun Yamagishi and Norman Camacho (4.42 lbs), Guo Liang and Zhao and Xiao Qin (3.5 lbs), and Guo Jiaynan, Zhang Wen Jun, and Lu Hui Quan (3.5 lbs).

151.44 lbs of fish was accumulated in the event, joined by 25 spearfishermen. The MASC would like to thank Richard Seman, Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Ray Roberto, Gene Weaver, and its sponsors - Marpac, Saipan Fisherman’s Association, and Senator Ralph Torres. The competition was dedicated to one of MASC’s fellow divers, Jesus Manuel N. Castro.
