Guam women’s basketball plays for Micro gold after beating NMI

HAGÅTÑA — The Guam women's basketball team, mostly made up of young and rising stars, got off to a fast start against CNMI and dominated the game, as they easily won 97-49 in Pohnpei which is hosting the Micronesian Games.

Guam's Destiny Castro was the leading scorer as she netted 18 points, hitting 9 out of 14 field goals.

The CNMI's top scorer was Jamie Mendoza who scored 10 points of the teams.

Guam women's team will now play for the Marshall Islands in the championship game.

Guam won the gold medal four years ago at the 7th Micro Games in Palau.

According to Guam's head coach Eddie Pelkey, the team is also expected to take home the gold this year.

"We came here to compete and to defend our gold medal. Anything else would be a failure, its gold or bust," said Pelkey.

Despite the team members being young, they were excited to prove that they are capable of competing at a higher level in the Micronesian Games.

The team has two veteran playersm Jocelyn Pardilla and Kathryn "Kat" Castro, while the rest are young guns like Kali Benevente, Alina Bonto, Felicia Borja and Destiny Castro.
