Fast break: For off-island games

THE Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands is organizing fund raising events for its men’s and women’s national teams who are sent off island to participate in the major events like Micronesian Games and South Pacific Games as well as the mini Games.

This what makes BANMI’s leagues different from other basketball events, the beneficiaries of collected fees remain unclear.

Why are they having leagues, anyway? Are they helping the island’s national federation of basketball?

A lot of questions need to be answered.

The organizers of the other b basketball leagues in the islands are saying they are not making money. They claim they are using their own personal money to fund the leagues.

Are they really reporting their gains to Taxation and Revenue?

Basketball is the only sport in Saipan that could do this. This is also one of the reasons basketball is not performing in off island events because of lack of funding.

Basketball need to start paying the needed personnel to carry out the task. CNMI have the talents to send off-island especially in the Micronesian Games just like what we have done in the 2006 Micronesian Women’s team that won gold medal.

Unless all basketballs are united, the many basketball events will remain without helping the commonwealth’s legitimate athletes.

Having the adequate funding we will be able to perform in the next games just like what we did in the just concluded Micronesian Games from zero wins to four wins.

And if the organization is not really doing good its referees won't stand out in off-island competitions.

I want to commend BANMI referee, Arnold Mesa for a job well done in the just concluded Micronesian Games in Phonpei.
