THE Old Stars regained their lead midway to the ball game then never let lose to beat the GSM Masters during last Monday’s game of the Saipan Baseball League’s Masters at the Francisco Tanko Palacios Baseball Field.
After one scoreless inning, leftfielder Manny Cabrera and first baseman Ed Kapileo moved the Old Stars ahead by launching a two RBI single and a fielders’ choice respectively in the top of the second inning.
The Old Stars protected their strong lead blanking the GMS Masters second straight inning.
The Masters tightened their defense as well with leftfielder Zack Igisomar gloving fly ball from George David and line drive from Derron Flores in the top of the third.
With third baseman Ben Hocog blasting a two-run double, second baseman Mark Flores and Igisomar chipping in an RBI single apiece, the GSM Masters wiped out the Old Stars’ lead in the bottom of the third.
Cabrera sliced for his second base hit driving in third baseman Ben Tagabuel in the fourth and relieve pitcher Joe Litulumar hit a two RBI single in the fifth, and the Old Stars were back in the winning stance regaining their five-run lead.
The Old Stars protected their lead by shutting the Masters out three innings in a row.
In the top of the seventh, Litulumar singled and took the home plate for an unearned run to stretch their lead.
Litulumar allowed only two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh before relieve second baseman, Flores and relieve first baseman Tom Diaz finished the Masters off and secured the second spot as the season approaches the playoff.
