MCDONALDS and the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation took down their respective opponents last Tuesday, the second day of the 2017 JEM Corporation LTD. Customer Appreciation Basketball Tournament held at the Tan Siu Lin Sports Complex.
McDonalds secured their victory with a strong third quarter performance shutting down Best Deal/RNV to just seven points to push the safe distance leading to the win 80-65.
The towering forwards of Gil Gapor and Mcklein Achas gave McDonalds a sense of relief as they dominated the boards grabbing every rebound in both offense and defense.
With that, Sonn Macaranas took advantage of the fast break opportunities scoring eight points and collecting assists to feed Sherwin Gaspar with two triples for a 20-13 lead.
Andy Mortos prevented Best Deal/RNV from falling behind as he sizzled in the second quarter. With every shot that McDonalds made, Mortos had an answer draining back-to-back buckets making more than 70 percent of the teams score to trim their deficit 33-38.
But after the halftime break, McDonalds had stronger defense. They silenced Mortos leaving Best Deal nearly scoreless as the rest of the team could not put up any shots.
Best Deal was held down to just seven points while Mcklein Achas and Macaranas continued to fire at will pushing a double- digit, victory 80-65.
CUC 72, Joeten 69
CUC pulled a major comeback from falling eight points behind.
They worked their way to grab the lead in the final quarter to upset Joeten 72-69.
Joeten was having the upper hand with double-digit lead throughout the first half.
Alex Lauron worked the inside with ease collecting eight points at the first quarter and continued to punish CUC. They progressed to the second.
With Sidney Quan and Chris Rogolofoi adding height into the mix, they managed to lead as much as eight points 39-31.
CUC snapped out of the cold streak when John Santos fired two triples during the opening of the third quarter ignited the spark. They started to work better as a team moving the ball with smart passes to get passed Joeten’s wall bringing the lead back within reach.
Joeten started to fall behind as CUC put Quan and Lauron’s output to a halt but Ferdie Tobias stepped up sinking two three-point shots to keep the team afloat 58-54.
Despite Tobias’ clutch performance, Joeten continued to struggle. They just could not get the rhythm going as only Quan could do damage missing several shots and committing turnovers to hand CUC easy buckets on the other end.
CUC took the lead with Eugene Manglona starting to make his shots after a silent third quarter with six points while Santos drained a critical three-pointer for the dagger seizing the win 72-69.
